What year did you start on the Jetstar Apprentice Program?
I started my apprenticeship in 2022. We were the ‘guinea pig’ year for the Melbourne Apprenticeship program (it was previously based in Newcastle). Luckily for me, I’m originally from Melbourne, so I didn’t have to relocate for the opportunity like some of my colleagues.
What Trade Stream did you takeoff in?
Due to it being the first year in Melbourne, we were lucky enough to have a choice of trade stream. After reviewing all the options, I was still undecided on what to pick. In the end, I chose the mechanical stream and haven’t looked back since.
What are your highlights of the Program?
The highlight of the program so far has been the everyday learning – there is so much involved in maintaining aircraft. Also, the opportunities to work at other ports. For example in Sydney, I got to observe Boeing carrying out repairs on one of our aircraft. I’ve also enjoyed the opportunity to work with different people on large jobs, such as engine changes and landing gear changes.
How has your development as an Apprentice been supported?
Anyone and everyone is willing to help us as Jetstar apprentices. Literally all the AME’s and LAME’s that I’ve worked with are all very willing to not only help, but teach. There are also direct contacts such as the Apprentice Facilitator that are there solely to help us with anything we need, and they are always super helpful.
Advice for anyone thinking of applying for the program or joining the aviation industry?
If you’re keen and enthusiastic to learn, anyone can do it, regardless of your skill set. Your tool skills and aviation/plane knowledge can all be learnt during the Apprenticeship Program. It’s such a unique experience and there is so much to learn between the different systems on the planes, to the different models themselves. Overall, it’s an environment of comradery and constant learning.

Don’t think that you can’t get into it because you don’t have the skills or experience. If you’ve got the passion for it, it’s 100% achievable
