Jetstar Engineer on Plane

Time flies when you’re having fun: Luke’s experience as an Engineering Graduate.

Time sure has flown during my time at Jetstar as a Graduate. In just over 12 months I have been able to learn so much about engineering in the aviation industry and grow professionally from a passionate team who want to help me succeed. I want to share about what makes Jetstar a great place to begin your career!

First impressions count

Prior to beginning in a graduate role I was given the opportunity to complete a three month internship in the Engineering Training department at Jetstar. In these three months I was given the ability to talk to many leaders across the engineering function and begin to gain an understanding of how important the engineering function is to an airline. The willingness of the people around me to help me learn made me want more of it – so I applied for the Graduate program.

A passion for meaningful work

24 months later, the passion to provide opportunities in the business is still strong, with people around enabling me to contribute to the operation of Jetstar meaningfully whilst ensuring I am well supported. I have worked on many projects which have helped me develop me skills including software implementation and support, dashboard development, real-world problem solving, and visual and written communication. I was able to put all of these skills together to develop and roll out an engineering operations dashboard that provides timely information on engineering performance to key stakeholders across the engineering team aiding in effective decision making to minimise disruptions - this is now one of the most used dashboards in Jetstar Engineering! The opportunities at Jetstar are full of purpose and reason – we want to be putting our effort into work that matters.

Business wide learning

Aside from working on larger projects, I have been given other opportunities to learn about the business to build my foundation for the future. I have visited ports across the network, both domestically and internationally, meeting engineers and management, and building relationships. I have worked with frontline staff to both provide additional support where needed and also learn how different teams work, whether it be checking in customers or the end-to-end journey of cabin crew arriving at the airport to the final aircraft door being closed. These are experiences that have come readily in the graduate program, which have broadened my understanding and knowledge of the business.

Development Opportunities

The team at Jetstar have also helped me develop professionally and given me exposure across engineering and wider airline functions. I have monthly mentoring sessions where I can explore how to tackle my career as well as work relationships. I am in regular contact with my manager, providing an amazing opportunity to learn from those around me. I meet regularly with the other graduates, in both formal development sessions and casual catch ups, both of which always provide an opportunity to learn from each other. This has given me the confidence that at the end of the program I will be ready to move on to new and exciting work within Jetstar.

Advice for future Graduates

If you think that a future at Jetstar is for you, I encourage you to apply. Show us your passion and drive, take the opportunities you are given, and be ready to apply some problem-solving skills to real situations. Being able to demonstrate you have this passion and drive will really make you stand out!
