Jetstar Aircraft

Women in Tech: Lucinda shares her Jetstar career that combines her love for travel and data.

I absolutely love to TRAVEL!!! I enjoy learning about other cultures and experiencing them first-hand, as well as savouring their cuisines. I love to explore new destinations and revisit old ones as there's always more to experience. Between my studies, I have taken two gap years which enabled me to reach all seven continents. I am fortunate enough to be well on track to visit 90 Countries before I turn 30, and I am looking forward to many more adventures to come.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science, Extended Major of Mathematics, I decided to pursue Data Science as it most aligned with my skillset and interest. I started my career as a 2018 Data Science and Analytics Grad at the National Australia Bank. I was able to gain a breadth of knowledge in Data and Analytics over my four years working at NAB in various D&A roles. Always drawn to learn more, I completed my Master of Mathematics part-time with a specialisation in Numerical Analysis and Optimisation.

What made you choose to apply for a role at Jetstar?

After two years of Covid and Melbourne lockdowns, I was well and truly itching to travel again and knew I wouldn't be alone! I thought it would be an exhilarating time to join an airline and I was right. I came aboard the Jetstar team towards the end of 2021 and have thoroughly enjoyed learning so much more about an industry I am truly passionate about.

In my first week I was able to tour MEL hangar, which felt like having a back-stage pass! In the two and a half years since, I've seized further opportunities to visit the airport, chat to engineers and ground staff or sit-in with our customer recovery teams to learn more about our daily operations and satiate my curiosity.

What do you love most about working at Jetstar?

One of Jetstar's values is Passionately Orange which means we are confidently ourselves and celebrate our successes. To me this translates to a great culture where everyone loves what they do and can have fun with it. People are happy to help, go for a coffee to share ideas or let you in on Staff Travel tips and tricks. Yes, one of the major benefits is Staff Travel! I think it helps to experience the tangible outcome of the work we do in Head Office by travelling our network. Since joining I've been lucky enough to fly Jetstar domestic, trans-Tasman and up to Bali, Thailand and South Korea.

Working for an airline means we have lots of different data and a diversity of problems to brainstorm and solve. I've been able to work on fascinating projects such as optimising the catering load, predicting customer churn, assessing impacts of delays, categorising personas and recommending next best offerings.

I can see the benefits to the community of the amazing value we offer as we afford more people the opportunity to seek out adventure and stay connected to loved-ones interstate and/or abroad. One of my closest friends, who runs a small retail business, is a Club Jetstar member which means she can more easily travel around the country to reach expos at discounted sale fare prices. I am proud to be a part of making dreams a reality.

What are you working on now?

I'm interested in solving real-world problems and continuing to drive strategical change. I want to deliver work of impact and help the business make informed decisions through Data Science.

It has been challenging for all airlines to start-up again post-Pandemic but we have lots of planned initiatives underway at Jetstar to improve performance.

I've recently been tasked with leading End-to-End planning from a Data & Analytics perspective, which is a hugely exciting project that aims to optimise our operations while staying true to our low-cost nature. I'm looking forward to leading Demand Forecasting and Schedule Optimisation work among many more Machine Learning use cases as part of this awesome assignment!
